New Jersey's Bag Ban Failure

Recently, the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) recognized a report commissioned by the American Recyclable Plastic Bag Alliance (ARPBA), that examined  the effects of a New Jersey ban on single-use plastic bags.

According to WSJ: “In a fit of virtue-signaling, New Jersey passed a law in 2020 that banned single-use plastic and paper bags in all stores and food service businesses starting in May 2022. It’s a major inconvenience for state residents, and now a report suggests it has also been an environmental dud.”

WSJ went on to cite the report’s findings that, while the number of thin plastic bags declined since the ban, the heavier, reusable plastics bags consumers turned to resulted in a 500% rise in greenhouse gas emissions and that “90% of the new reusable bags are used a mere two or three times. So they are piling up in landfills and homes.”
