PLASTICS Chief Economist Dr. Perc Pineda breaks down the latest GDP data and what it means for the plastics industry in his newest blog post.

After a sluggish start to the year, the U.S. economy rebounded in Q2 with 3.0% growth — a promising sign for mature sectors like plastics. The analysis highlights:

✅ Consumer spending is up, including increases in off-premises food and beverage purchases and motor vehicle sales — both key drivers of plastics demand.
✅ Imports dropped sharply, temporarily boosting GDP and underscoring the impact of tariffs on trade and manufacturing.
✅ Investment in industrial equipment rose, pointing to steady momentum in manufacturing expansion despite high interest rates.

With 87.6% of plastics manufacturing supporting consumer goods and services, economic resilience directly benefits the industry. The report also explores how tariffs, inflation, and shifting business investments are shaping demand across packaging, automotive, and construction markets.
